Inbetween by Denis Haračić
Inbetween is an exhibition featuring work from different setups created throughout Denis Haračić`s career so far. The setting is changing between themes related to broader social groups and introverted depictions of the artists inner self.
Denis Haračić is a visual artist currently based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He primarily uses combined techniques of printmaking, drawing, painting and digital installation. Haračić tends to question social structures and identity from both the individual and our group perspective. His seemingly archaic work is based on existential and archetypal principles drawn from an intimate space, moving towards a universal message of bare and exposed humanity. The ideas Haračić is working on manifest them-selves in anthropomorphic depictions of psychological situations trapped between numb contemplation and monstrous dehumanization. The artist has shown his work on exhibitions worldwide gaining recognition and a number of awards in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.
About the exhibited work
The MIRROR is a multi-panel wall piece dedicated to the idea of self-reflection, but even more so to the concept of reflection in general. In its original form it consists out of two formations of twenty self-portraits standing opposed to each other in the exhibition space. During the last year it has been changed into different setups fitting different occasions, always following the same principles of mirroring and repetition. The portraits, individually based on the same outline of the authors head, tend to tell a story about slow and steady progression which is also reflected in the slow cutting process of every linocut matrix used to create this piece. The nature of this process enables a feeling of meditation, allowing time for self-reflection. Visually, the strong line-work and precise cutting on each printed linocut plate create a geometrical maze, inviting the viewer to closely inspect the intricate details contained in every portrait. This work was nominated as one of the finalists for the 2023 “Zvono” award for young artists.
The REJECT is a cycle of work featuring 50 portraits depicting the rejected young cultural scene of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as 5 audio installations created in collaboration with musician and producent BILLAIN. This series of portraits has been a turning point in Haračić`s career as it involves itself in the problems of modern-day Bosnian society depicting the antagonistic discourse towards art and culture. Each portrait is dedicated to one of many young cultural workers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, tirelessly working in fields of art, music, and literature. Technically the pieces are common ground between classical printmaking and contemporary drawing and painting techniques, evoking the artists more expressive side of visual narration.
The FAMILY PORTRAIT is a series of paintings recreated after the artists old family photos. Each painting is derived from a specific photo in the search for long lost nostalgia and already forgotten times. The very colourful but also very expressionistic paintings stand opposed to the exactness found in other work, narrating a story more open to interpretation. Like fading spectres from another time, the depicted characters stay unnamed and unidentified.
